💵 I could not sell you what I bought

Over the last three weeks I asked which direction you were most curious about trying, and a good number of you answered.

Of those who answered, nearly half said, honestly, still figuring it out. Close to a third said a small, safe online income idea. A smaller group said sharing what you already know, and an even smaller group again said learning to use AI.

The answers were spread out, which is what I hoped for. There is no correct one on that list.

Still, I want to sit with the largest. Nearly half of you said you do not know yet. That is not the answer people expect to be allowed to give, and it is probably the most honest one there. You have been around long enough to know that picking a direction badly costs real time.

So here is what I take from it: not knowing yet is a normal place to be standing, not a problem to be fixed by Saturday.

By the end of this, you will:

Southwest Airlines has flown one kind of plane for most of its history. Every other major airline runs a mix for different routes. Southwest picked one and stuck with it for decades.

On paper that sounds limiting. In practice every mechanic could work on every plane, every pilot could fly every plane, and no parts sat idle. They turned that into forty-seven straight profitable years.

Nobody would call one aircraft type an exciting strategy. But boring and simple, done consistently, beats clever and complicated more often than people expect.

Kiplinger's guide for people starting something in retirement leads with the same advice: "Start small: choose one service or product to avoid overwhelming yourself." One plane, flown well.

AARP's 2026 scam guide puts it about as plainly as it can be put:

"Never pay a fee. If you are required to pay money to get a job or an interview, it is a scam."

And: be highly suspicious of guarantees of great pay and few hours for work at home.

I did not need funnels, which is the word for the multi-step sales pages every course told me to build. I did not need paid ads, tech headaches, or twelve different tools. What I needed was something simple, with fewer moving parts than the thing I kept buying. I just did not know that yet.

The most recent one came with resale rights, meaning I was allowed to sell it on. I read it through and could not do it. It was bad. Not dangerous, just useless, written by somebody who has never sat with a person who is genuinely unsure whether any of this is for them.

So I wrote my own instead.

A free tool called What You Could Teach. You answer nine questions about work you have already done. It shows you which part of your experience somebody else would actually pay attention to, and hands you the outline for a short guide teaching exactly that. It emails you a copy, so there is nothing to write down off a screen.

There is also a short course, A List of Your Own, on building an email list without spending money on ads. The first three lessons are free, and nobody asks you for anything until you have finished them. If you want the rest after that, it is seventeen dollars, one time. I am still writing the final lessons, and anything I add later is included.

Now, against AARP's rule. Nobody is hiring you, so there is no fee to be hired. And you are not asked for money to get started. You read three lessons first and decide for yourself whether the rest is worth seventeen dollars. Nothing is guaranteed, and I am not going to name a number you might earn, because I do not know and neither does anybody who tells you they do.

If you did Tuesday's paper exercise, get that list out. Those three items are your answers. The nine questions will ask you the same thing in more detail, and having written them by hand once already, you will move through it in a few minutes.

If you did not, no matter. Open the tool cold. The questions do the narrowing for you, so you are not asked to arrive with an answer.

Either way, read what it gives you before you decide anything. That is the whole step.

If you do it, you finish with one narrow thing you could explain to one person. That is one plane. Whether you ever fly it is entirely up to you.

If you do not, Saturday goes on as normal and nothing is lost. Nine questions is a small way to start figuring, and it is genuinely fine to skip it.
