Welcome back to Retire & RISE {{first_name}}

A while back, I spent twenty minutes fighting with my phone. It would ring, I would answer, and I could not hear a soul on the other end. I turned the volume all the way up. I hung up and called back. I even restarted the thing, certain that would fix it. Nothing.
My granddaughter Riley, 9, walked past, glanced over my shoulder, tapped the screen twice, and kept going. The next call came through clear as day – twenty minutes of my frustration sorted in under thirty seconds by someone who was not even trying.
I felt foolish for about an hour. What I did not do back then was notice the quieter thing: I make that same little tap now without a second thought. Somewhere along the way, it stopped being hard. I just never stopped to notice.
🌱 What This Short Note Gives You
A gentler way to measure how far you have come – one that does not depend on anyone else noticing.
Why the progress you have already made tends to hide in plain sight.
One small, no-pressure step you can take today.
A little more quiet confidence in what you are already capable of.

🎯 What "Easier" Is Trying to Tell You
We are good at noticing what still feels hard – the button we cannot find, the word we do not know yet. We are far less good at noticing what used to be hard and simply is not anymore.
That blind spot is human. People who study motivation find that we forget our starting point almost as fast as we move past it; the difficulty fades, and the evidence of how far we have come fades with it. Writing in Psychology Today, behavioral scientist Julia Dhar puts it plainly: progress that goes unobserved does not do its job – it has to be named to become fuel.
Why does this matter now? Because the ground really has shifted under all of us. The phone in your pocket now does things every day that were far from ordinary not many years ago. You did not just wait for the world to get easier. You quietly learned it. That counts, and it is worth seeing.

🛠️ One Small Thing to Notice
Here is the whole step, and it is small on purpose.
Sometime today, notice one thing that feels easier now than it did six months or a year ago. It does not have to be about technology. It might be sending a photo to a friend. Paying a bill online without calling anyone. Asking ChatGPT a question and actually getting something useful back. Finding your way somewhere new without a paper map.
Then do the part most of us skip: name it. Say it to yourself, or jot it on the back of an envelope. "I can do this now. A while ago, I could not." That naming is the step that turns a passing moment into something you actually carry with you. If you want the full reasoning behind why naming it matters, Julia Dhar lays it out well here.
That is it. One thing. Named. You are done.

🌿 What Changes When You Look
If you do this, nothing dramatic happens, and that is rather the point. You simply end the day holding one honest piece of evidence that you are not stuck – that you are, in fact, moving. Do it a few times and those small pieces add up into something sturdier than a pep talk: a quiet, earned sense that you can learn the next thing too.
If you do not, no harm done. But the progress stays invisible, and invisible progress has a way of feeling like no progress at all. That is usually the gap – not that you have not moved, but that no one, including you, stopped to say so.

💬 One Small Notice, One Small Tap
So here is your step for today: notice the single thing that feels easier now, and name it. That is the whole action.
And if you feel like it, you can point that same noticing in a direction. A couple of weeks back I asked which way you are most curious to lean next, and many of you tapped in – thank you. If you did not get to it, the same one-tap question is still open below. No typing, no commitment, and if you already answered, there is nothing more to do.
Which direction are you most curious about trying right now?
There are no wrong answers, and "still figuring it out" is a perfectly good place to stand. Your tap just helps me aim the next few notes somewhere useful to you.
Results will be published Aug 22.
That is all for today. Notice one thing that got easier – you have come further than you think.
Talk soon,
Bob
