Welcome back to Retire & RISE {{first_name}}

The Hobby You Already Have Might Be the Income You're Looking For

Hey, it's Bob. Welcome back to another issue of Retire & RISE, where we take this stuff slow and skip the hype.

I spent twenty minutes this morning digging through a shoebox of receipts I swore I would file back in the spring. That shoebox is a good reminder of how I used to run things. Piling stuff up, chasing the next idea, never finishing the one in front of me. Today I want to hand you the opposite of that shoebox.

In today's issue:

  • The Big Idea: the hobby you already have might already be enough.

  • The Deep-Dive: the calmest, least salesy way to let people know.

  • Story or Example: my own shiny-object years, and how I finally stopped.

  • Your Tactical Takeaway: one small step, paper and pen, no tech.

  • Sign-off: your one-word reply, no pressure either way.

💡 The Big Idea

You do not need to learn a brand-new skill to earn a little extra. You probably already have something you know well and enjoy. Gardening. Fixing things. Cooking. Coin collecting. Whatever it is.

The trick is not learning something new. It is quietly letting a small group of interested people know what you already know.

That is it. That is the whole idea.

🔎 The Deep-Dive

Before I explain the tool, let me give you the one number that made me a believer in this whole approach.

More than 60% of the people on my list open these notes. In the email world, that is very high. Most newsletters would be thrilled with half that. That number is not about being clever. It is about trust, built slowly, with a small group who wanted to hear from me. Hold onto that as I explain the rest.

So how do you let people know without turning into a salesman, chasing followers, or trying to go viral?

A free email newsletter.

Let me be plain about what that is. It is a short note you send by email to people who asked to hear from you. No website. No camera. No follower count. No algorithm deciding whether anyone sees you.

Now, here is the part I know is scaring some of you. "Bob, I am not a writer."

Good news. You do not have to be.

You do not need to buy any software, either.

Here is what took me far too long to understand. You do not write the note from scratch.

You use a free online helper called ChatGPT. It is a free writing helper you open in any web browser, the same one you use to check your email.

You talk to it in plain words. You tell it your ideas, and it writes back for you.

Here is a small example. You could type:

"Write two short paragraphs about why fall is the best time to plant garlic. Keep it simple and friendly."

Thirty seconds later, you have a draft. Your knowledge, its typing.

That is the whole trick. You bring what you know. The tool handles the writing part that scares people off.

What it is not: it is not a get-rich thing, and it is not fast. Nothing real pays off in two weeks.

What it costs: nothing to start. Both the newsletter tool and ChatGPT have free versions. And one plain promise. If I ever recommend a tool with an affiliate link, I will say so right there.

Who should skip this: if you have no hobby or subject you enjoy talking about, this one is not for you. No shame in that. But most people have one, even if they do not think it is anything special.

📖 Story

Remember the shoebox? For a long stretch, I was a shiny-object chaser. I did that more times than I would care to admit.

I would find some new way to earn online, get a little excited, dive in, and quit two weeks later when the money did not show up. Then I would go hunting for the next thing. You stay busy, and you stay nowhere. That was me for years.

Then I finally did the boring thing. I picked one thing, this newsletter, and I just kept showing up. Same small promise, over and over, to a small group of people who cared.

That is when that open rate started to mean something. I did not build anything clever. I just kept telling the same honest thing to people who wanted to hear it.

That is the whole model. Small and slow on purpose. A handful of interested people beats a big audience every time.

Your Tactical Takeaway

Here is your one step this week, and it is a small one on purpose.

Take a piece of paper. Write down one thing you know well enough to talk about for two minutes. Just one. Not the perfect one. Just one that mildly interests you.

That is the whole step.

You are not signing up for anything. You are not building a website. You are not writing a word yet. You are just naming the subject. Naming it is the part that gets people unstuck.

Next week I will walk through the free tool I would use to send your first note, step by step, assuming zero tech confidence. And I will show you exactly how to hand your ideas to ChatGPT so it does the writing. If the first setup trips you up, I am glad to walk you through it together.

For now, just the paper and the pen. Decide up front you will give this a fair season before you judge it, not a weekend. You are not deciding forever. You are just deciding for now.

👋 Sign-off

That one subject on your paper is smaller than it feels, and that is the point. One step at a time is exactly how this works.

You do not need a home run. You need a win. And a short newsletter about something you already love, written for you by a free helper, is about as low-stakes a place to start as I know.

If you want, reply and tell me the one subject you wrote down. Even one word is enough. There is no wrong answer, you will not bother me, and I read every reply.

And if you do not? Nothing bad happens. No pressure either way.

See You at the Bank,
Bob
